Our Story

Generation Seven and Counting...

In 1836, the first generation of the McKinney family settled in Fountain County, Indiana alongside Coal Creek on a farm that is presently named Walnut Knoll. My name is Taylor McKinney Brown, I am a part of Generation Seven of our family farm, and in 2016 my beloved grandfather, Pearce McKinney, passed away, to Glioblastoma, leaving behind a true legacy and the farm itself to his two beloved daughters, Trish and Heather, our sixth generation. It was not until 2020, upon my graduation from Purdue University, with a degree in Agribusiness Management that my husband Coston and I were fortunate to move in the vacant 1892 farmhouse. That is when the real work began.

One project at a time, we started to clean up Walnut Knoll and bring life back to the land. Land that was once filled with sheep by generation 5, cattle by generations 4 and 3, and hogs before that.

Now we are adding our own personal touches from generations 6 and 7.

It has been my dream since I was a little girl to grow up and manage the family farm until we are ready to pass it to the next generations after us. I quickly learned the type of hard work, dedication, and teamwork it will take to witness this dream manifest. Leaving me with a passion for advocating the importance of protecting and supporting family farms.

Our chickens and their

Hatching Eggs

Chickens were the first step to bring life back to the farm. After repurposing a cluttered shed into our chicken coop, I brought home eight, tiny fluff balls, and soon eight became about 50… maybe 60… you know, chicken math! An obsession with chicken genetics and collecting breeds quickly began to chase that so-called rainbow of eggs. And now that we have it, we are able to share it!

Raising chickens is a true love of mine. Watching chicks hatch and quickly grow into beautiful birds with big, individualistic personalities has been a blessing and taught us so much about mother nature’s gifts.
